Kazakhstan Travel Guide: From Almaty to the Tien Shan

Book Tour 4 U Team August 20, 2026

Discover the largest country in Central Asia — from the tree-lined boulevards of Almaty to the dramatic canyons and alpine lakes of the Tien Shan mountains.

Why Visit Kazakhstan?

Kazakhstan is a land of contrasts — where futuristic architecture in Astana meets ancient Silk Road history in the south, and where the vast steppe gives way to the snow-capped Tien Shan mountains. It's a destination that surprises at every turn.

Almaty: The Cultural Capital

Almaty, the former capital, remains the country's cultural heart. Tree-lined boulevards, Soviet-era architecture, and a backdrop of snow-capped mountains make it one of Central Asia's most beautiful cities.

Must-see: Panfilov Park and the stunning wooden Ascension Cathedral, the Green Bazaar for local flavors, and a cable car ride up to Shymbulak mountain resort.

Charyn Canyon

Often called Kazakhstan's Grand Canyon, Charyn Canyon stretches for 154 kilometers with dramatic rock formations. The Valley of Castles, the most photographed section, is a day trip from Almaty.

Big Almaty Lake

This turquoise alpine lake, just 30km from Almaty, is one of the country's most Instagram-worthy spots. The drive up the mountain road offers spectacular views of the Tien Shan range.

Astana: The Futuristic Capital

Renamed and rebuilt, Astana (formerly Nur-Sultan) is a futuristic capital rising from the steppe. The Bayterek Tower, the Khan Shatyr entertainment center, and the Palace of Peace and Reconciliation are architectural marvels.
